How Do I Show Up in ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini?

The 2026 GEO playbook for Camarillo and Ventura County businesses. How each platform decides what to say, the three layers of AI visibility, why Reddit drives 40% of citations, and the specific steps that get your business named when a customer asks an AI for a recommendation.

1. The Question Every Camarillo Owner Is Now Asking

A year ago, business owners asked us how to get found on Google. Now the question has shifted. They open ChatGPT, type "best plumber in Camarillo" or "who does HVAC repair in Ventura County," and watch a competitor's name come back. Then they call us.

Getting ranked on Google and getting named by an AI assistant are related but separate outcomes. You can rank on page one and still be invisible when a customer asks ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini for a recommendation. The reason is structural: these tools do not simply read your website and decide whether it is good enough. They synthesize answers from dozens of sources at once, and they weight cross-platform brand presence more heavily than on-page quality. The decision about whether to name your business is largely made before the AI ever looks at your page.

This guide covers the full picture for a Camarillo or Ventura County business: how each of the three platforms actually decides what to say, the three layers of visibility you need to build, why Reddit alone drives roughly 40% of AI citations, and the specific steps that move you from invisible to named. Everything here is grounded in 2026 research, not guesswork.

Who this guide is for

Local business owners in Camarillo and Ventura County who want customers to find them when they ask ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini for a recommendation. No jargon, no hype about "AI optimization" as a magic service. Just the mechanics of how these tools work and what to do about them.

2. SEO, GEO, and AEO: The Three Layers of Visibility in 2026

Most guides blur these together. They are not the same thing, and treating them as one discipline is why so many businesses rank well on Google and still never get mentioned by an AI.

There are three distinct layers, and each builds on the one before it.

SEO

Search Engine Optimization

Get your pages ranking in Google and Bing for the searches your customers make. This is the foundation. Without it, the AI never discovers your content in the first place.

GEO

Generative Engine Optimization

Get your content selected as a citation source when an AI answers a question. This requires answer-first structure, specific data, named experts, and off-site brand mentions.

AEO

Answer Engine Optimization

Get your business named in the answer itself, not just cited as a source. This depends on brand mention density across multiple independent sites the AI trusts.

The layers compound. SEO gets you into the AI's discovery pool. GEO gets your content selected as a citation. AEO gets your business name spoken in the answer. A business that only invests in traditional SEO may rank well but get passed over for citation. A business that invests in GEO but has no off-site brand presence may get cited as a source without ever being named. You need all three.

The dependency that trips people up

You cannot skip SEO and go straight to GEO. The AI uses Google and Bing results as its discovery layer. If your page does not rank in the top 10 for a relevant query, the AI never sees it, no matter how well structured it is. SEO is the entry ticket. GEO and AEO are what you do once you are inside the room.

3. How ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini Decide What to Say

Treating all three platforms as the same "AI search" is the most common mistake in this field. They pull from different sources, at different speeds, with different trust hierarchies. A tactic that works on one can leave you invisible on another.

The clearest data on this comes from Sophie Coley, Head of AI and Strategy at Propellernet, who ran 200 identical prompts across ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini and measured how many external web searches each platform performed before responding. The results were striking.

PlatformSearch BehaviorWhat It Means for You
ChatGPTModerate searching. Uses Bing for web search mode; relies on training data for general knowledge.Highest volume of users. 87% of its web-search citations come from the Bing top 10. Rank well on Bing and you are in the running.
ClaudeFewest searches. Averaged about one web search per question regardless of question type.Leans hardest on training knowledge. Slower to reflect new content. Rewards sustained brand presence built up over time across many sources.
GeminiMost searching. Searched in almost every case, with search counts spiking on specific or combined questions.Closest to traditional Google ranking. 76% of its AI Overview citations come from the Google top 10. Rewards fresh, specific, well-structured content.

ChatGPT: the volume play, powered by Bing

ChatGPT has the largest user base of the three. When it runs a web search (the mode that cites sources), it queries Bing, and Seer Interactive's analysis found that 87% of its citations overlap with the Bing top 10 results. If you rank well on Bing, you are in the citation pool for ChatGPT. If you do not, you are not.

ChatGPT also has a training-based knowledge mode that does not search the web. That mode reflects a snapshot of the internet from its training cutoff. New businesses and new content take months or longer to enter that knowledge base organically. You cannot speed it up with a single blog post. You speed it up with sustained brand presence across many sources over time, which is exactly what the off-site mention strategy in Step 3 produces.

Claude: the knowledge-base play, slow and deliberate

Claude performed the fewest web searches in Coley's study, averaging about one per question. That means Claude leans harder on what it already knows from training. For a local business, this has a frustrating implication: Claude will not reflect your new content quickly. A blog post you publish today will not change what Claude says about you next week.

What Claude does reward is accumulated brand presence. The more your business name appears across Reddit, Yelp, industry directories, press, and review sites over a sustained period, the more likely Claude's training data absorbs you as a recognized entity. This is a long game. Start it now and you are months ahead of the competitor who starts in January.

Gemini: the fastest path, closest to traditional SEO

Gemini searched the most of the three platforms, and its search counts rose when questions got specific. It is the most dependent on traditional search ranking. Ahrefs' 2025 analysis found that 76% of pages cited in Google AI Overviews also appear in the top 10 organic results for that query. The entry ticket is standard Google SEO.

What changes is the format filter. Gemini extracts answer components from pages that already rank. So a page ranking third with an answer-first structure and FAQ schema will often get cited over a page ranking first that buries its key points in paragraph five. For a local business, Gemini is the fastest platform to move the needle on, because it pulls from live Google results and gives significant weight to your Google Business Profile for local queries.

For a Camarillo business, where to start

Gemini and Google AI Overviews are the fastest to influence, because they lean on Google ranking and your Google Business Profile, both of which you can improve in weeks. ChatGPT is the highest-volume platform and rewards Bing ranking plus Reddit presence. Claude is the slowest to move and depends on accumulated brand presence. If you can only act on one this month, run the manual audit in the measurement section, see which platform your customers use, and start there.

4. The 40% Reddit Factor (And Why It Matters Locally)

Here is the single most surprising data point in this entire field: Reddit accounts for roughly 40% of all citations across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude combined. Not 4%. Forty.

This is not a fluke. Google signed a content licensing partnership with Reddit in 2024 that gave Reddit dramatically expanded indexation. Highly-upvoted, detailed Reddit threads now surface in AI answers at a rate that would have been unthinkable two years ago. Perplexity cites Reddit in 6.6% of all responses, its highest single-domain rate. ChatGPT leans on it heavily for recommendation and opinion queries.

For a Camarillo business, this matters more than it does for a national brand. Local subreddits are small, which means a handful of genuine, detailed answers in r/camarillo or r/venturacounty can put your business in front of the exact people who ask AI tools for local recommendations. The bar is low because almost no local business is doing this deliberately.

Do not promote your business on Reddit. Redditors will downvote you, the community may ban you, and the engagement signals that make Reddit valuable to AI tools will collapse. The approach that works is contributing genuine, detailed answers to questions in your area of expertise. Your profile and occasional contextually relevant mentions do the rest. The full playbook is in our Reddit marketing guide.

The mechanism is worth understanding. When someone asks ChatGPT "who is the best plumber in Camarillo," the tool queries Google and Bing, reads the top results, and looks for cross-source agreement before naming a business. A detailed Reddit thread in r/camarillo where three different people recommend the same plumber is exactly the kind of independent, multi-source confirmation the AI is looking for. Your own website saying you are the best is one source. Three strangers on Reddit agreeing you are good is three sources. The math favors the Reddit thread.

Step 1: Rank in Google and Bing First

Before any AI-specific tactic matters, you need to rank in the top 10 on Google and Bing for the questions your customers ask. This is the discovery layer every major AI platform uses. Skip it and nothing else in this guide will work.

The good news: for a local Camarillo business, ranking in the top 10 is far easier than ranking nationally, because most of your competitors have incomplete Google Business Profiles, thin websites, and zero off-site presence. The bar is low.

The foundation that gets you into the discovery pool

  • Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. For most local businesses, this single asset drives 60 to 70 percent of new customer calls.
  • Build a website with a page for each service you offer, your city in the title tags, and LocalBusiness schema. It does not need to be fancy. It needs to answer what you do, who you serve, and how to contact you in under five seconds.
  • Get 25 to 50 Google reviews above 4.5 stars. Review velocity matters more than total count. Text every satisfied customer within 48 hours of completing their job.
  • Get listed on Yelp, BBB, Apple Maps, Bing Places, and the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce directory with identical name, address, and phone number.
  • Publish content that answers the specific questions your customers ask, optimized for Camarillo and Ventura County search intent.

The Bing blind spot

Most local businesses obsess over Google and forget Bing entirely. Because 87% of ChatGPT's web-search citations come from the Bing top 10, ignoring Bing means ignoring a direct path into ChatGPT. Bing Webmaster Tools is free. Submit your sitemap there too. The competition on Bing is lower than Google for most local categories, which makes ranking there faster.

Step 2: Write Content AI Can Actually Extract

AI systems do not read your content the way a person skimming for value does. They scan for extractable answer units: a direct statement, a number with a source, a named list of steps. The structure of your content determines whether the AI can pull a clean citation from it, regardless of how well it reads by traditional standards.

Lead with the answer

Pages with answer-first opening paragraphs get cited 67% more often than pages that build toward their conclusion (Search Engine Land, 2025). The principle is the inverted pyramid journalists have used for a century: your most important information goes first, context and detail follow.

For a service page about HVAC repair in Camarillo, this means your first paragraph answers the implied question ("What does HVAC repair in Camarillo cost, and who does it?") before it explains your background or lists your credentials. Write the AI Overview you want Google to use, then build the page to support it.

Embed specific, citable numbers

The Princeton and Georgia Tech GEO study (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024) found a 40% visibility lift from adding specific statistics. The mechanism is clear: AI systems have high confidence extracting a number with a source. "Revenue grew significantly" is unfalsifiable and unextractable. "HVAC tune-ups reduce average energy bills by 15 to 20 percent according to the U.S. Department of Energy" is something an AI can cite, attribute, and present with confidence.

Your own data counts. Job completion times, average costs in your area, customer outcomes you can document. These are specific, non-generic claims that AI tools prefer over vague industry platitudes.

Use FAQ schema on every page that answers a question

Adding FAQPage schema to pages that answer customer questions makes them 3.2 times more likely to appear in Google AI Overviews (Pixelmojo, 2026). The schema itself is not magic. What it signals is that your page is structured as a direct-question, direct-answer resource, which is exactly the format AI systems are built to extract from.

For a Camarillo dentist or contractor, this means adding a FAQ section to every service page. Five to eight questions your customers actually ask, with answers that are specific and complete in 60 to 100 words each. Write them as if a customer asked you directly, not as marketing copy. AI citations are earned by useful, direct answers, not by promotional language.

Step 3: Build Brand Mentions Off Your Site

This is where most GEO strategies stall. Business owners improve their website, add schema, restructure content, and then wonder why AI tools still do not mention them. The reason is the 91% problem: Ahrefs analyzed 75,000 brands across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and AI Overviews and found that brand websites directly account for only 9% of AI-generated brand mentions. The other 91% comes from third-party content.

The correlation data reinforces this. Brand web mentions (your name appearing anywhere on the internet) predicted AI citation frequency with a correlation of r=0.664. Total backlinks, the metric most SEO campaigns are built around, had a correlation of r=0.10. That is six times weaker. You can have hundreds of backlinks from strong domains and still be invisible to AI if nobody is talking about you independently.

The platforms that carry the most weight

  • Reddit drives roughly 40% of AI citations across all three platforms. Find the subreddits where your customers ask questions (r/camarillo, r/venturacounty, r/HomeImprovement, r/AskDentistry) and contribute genuinely useful, detailed answers. The full Reddit playbook for local businesses covers this in detail.
  • Yelp and Google Business Profile feed the review data AI tools pull for local recommendations. A business with 80 Google reviews at 4.8 stars and a complete profile gets named; a competitor with 12 reviews and an incomplete profile does not, regardless of website quality.
  • Local press in the Camarillo Acorn, Ventura County Star, or Thousand Oaks Acorn creates the third-party citation AI tools treat as high-authority confirmation. A mention in a business roundup or a quote in an industry piece is enough.
  • The Camarillo Chamber of Commerce directory (choosecamarillo.com), the City of Camarillo business portal, the Ventura County SBDC, and the BBB are all sources AI tools treat as credible regional signals. Each listing is another independent mention of your brand name.
  • YouTube accounts for 18.2% of citations in Google AI Overviews, the highest of any single domain. A 3 to 5 minute video answering one frequent customer question, shot on a phone, with the transcript in the description, creates a citation path your text-only competitors lack.

Consistency is the hidden lever

Your exact business name, address, and phone number need to match across every listing. Inconsistencies create ambiguity about whether all these references point to the same real-world business, which reduces the confidence with which AI will cite you. Run a citation audit using BrightLocal or Moz Local and fix every mismatch.

Step 4: Let the AI Crawlers In

Before any content or brand strategy matters, the AI platforms need to be able to actually access your site. There are over a dozen distinct AI crawler bots operating across the major platforms, and each is individually controllable through your robots.txt file.

The bots that matter most for a local business are the search-type crawlers, which power citations with links back to your site: OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT), Claude-SearchBot (Claude), PerplexityBot (Perplexity), and Google-Extended (Gemini training). For most businesses, the right call is to allow all of these.

If your site was built on a page builder that auto-generates a restrictive robots.txt blocking everything except Googlebot, you are invisible to every AI crawler by default. Check yourdomain.com/robots.txt and confirm these bots are not blocked. This is more common than people think.

The complete robots.txt configuration, the full list of AI crawler bot names, and the distinction between search bots and training bots are covered in detail in our deeper GEO guide. The short version: allow the search bots, make a case-by-case call on training bots, and never block everything.

Step 5: Schema Markup and Entity Building

Structured data, or schema markup, is the most direct signal you can give AI systems about what your business is, where it operates, and what it does. AI tools use entity matching. They look for consistent structured signals to confirm that your website, your Google Business Profile, your Yelp listing, and any press mentions all refer to the same real-world business. Without schema, this matching is probabilistic. With it, the connection is explicit.

The LocalBusiness schema block every Camarillo business needs

  • name matching your Google Business Profile and all directory listings exactly, with no keyword additions.
  • address with streetAddress, addressLocality (Camarillo), addressRegion (CA), postalCode, and addressCountry (US).
  • geo with latitude and longitude. Coordinates are unambiguous for entity matching in ways text addresses are not.
  • telephone with a local 805 area code number, consistent across all listings.
  • areaServed listing every city you serve: Camarillo, Thousand Oaks, Oxnard, Moorpark, Ventura, Simi Valley.
  • sameAs array linking to your Google Business Profile URL, Yelp listing, BBB profile, and Chamber directory page.
  • aggregateRating with ratingValue and reviewCount. This is the social proof AI can extract and surface.

The sameAs field is underused and disproportionately valuable

When AI tools see a LocalBusiness schema block that explicitly lists your Yelp URL, Google Business Profile URL, and Chamber listing, they can perform entity disambiguation, confirming that all these sources refer to the same business. This is the technical foundation that makes cross-source brand mention density count toward your AI visibility.

Beyond the base LocalBusiness schema, add FAQPage schema on every page that answers customer questions (the 3.2x citation lift is one of the highest single-implementation returns available), Review schema with your aggregate rating, and BreadcrumbList schema on blog and service pages so AI understands your site architecture.

What's Different for Camarillo Businesses

Most GEO guides are written for national brands trying to appear in broad category searches. For a Camarillo small business, the competitive dynamics are different, and in several ways, more favorable.

Local AI search is mostly uncontested right now

Most local businesses have no deliberate GEO strategy. When you search for local categories like "marketing agency in Camarillo" or "chiropractor in Thousand Oaks" in ChatGPT or Gemini today, the responses pull from whatever partial information happens to be indexed. Often that is just the businesses with the most Google reviews and a few Reddit mentions. The bar to appear is low because the competition for AI citations in local markets is still nearly nonexistent.

For categories where there is the least online content (specialty trades, professional services, niche retail), a single well-structured page with strong schema and a handful of Reddit or Yelp mentions can move you from invisible to first-mentioned in AI results for your category in Camarillo.

The Camarillo-specific citation sources that matter

Camarillo Chamber of Commerce (choosecamarillo.com)

Recognized local authority source AI tools treat as regional citation evidence.

City of Camarillo business portal

Official government source carrying trust weight similar to BBB.

Ventura County SBDC referral network

Regional business development authority; a mention signals legitimate local operation.

Camarillo Acorn and Ventura County Star

Regional press with real domain authority; one mention beats dozens of generic directory listings.

r/camarillo and r/venturacounty

Perplexity and ChatGPT actively pull from these for local queries; a genuine mention is direct citation fuel.

How your Google Business Profile feeds Gemini

Google's own AI, Gemini and AI Overviews, pulls heavily from Google Business Profile data for local queries. Your business description, category, services listed, Q&A section, and review sentiment are all direct inputs into what Gemini says about your business when someone asks about local providers in your category.

The practical implication: every field in your Google Business Profile is now content that Gemini reads. Your description should include your primary service and city in the first sentence. Your Q&A should contain the five most common questions your customers ask. Your service descriptions should be complete and specific, written in natural language, not keyword-stuffed. The full GBP optimization guide for Ventura County covers every field.

How to Know If It's Working

GEO is harder to measure than traditional SEO because there is no Search Console equivalent for AI citations. Google does not tell you how often you appear in AI Overviews. Perplexity does not send a weekly report. You have to build a measurement stack from indirect signals and periodic manual checks.

The manual audit: do this monthly

Open ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini separately. Ask each one the five questions your ideal customers would ask: "best marketing agency in Camarillo," "who does roof repair in Ventura County," "good family dentist in Camarillo." Document the responses. Which businesses appear. Which sources get cited. Whether you are mentioned at all. Do this every month from the same clean browser window and track the changes.

This manual check is slow and imperfect, but it is the closest thing to ground truth available for most small businesses. Enterprise tools like Profound, BrightEdge, and Semrush now offer AI visibility tracking, but they start at $500 to $1,000 per month, which is not realistic for a Camarillo small business until the market matures.

Indirect signals that correlate with AI visibility

The one measurement that beats every dashboard

Add "How did you hear about us?" to every lead form and intake call. You will start seeing answers like "I asked ChatGPT" or "Perplexity recommended you" before any analytics tool surfaces it. Real attribution from customers is worth more than proxy metrics from any dashboard.

The 60-Day Action Checklist

This checklist is prioritized by impact-to-effort ratio. The highest-value actions come first because they are the ones most Camarillo businesses have not done yet and that move the needle fastest.

1Week 1: Audit and unblock

  • Check your robots.txt at yourdomain.com/robots.txt. Confirm OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended are allowed, not blocked.
  • Run the manual AI audit: ask ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini 'best [your service] in Camarillo' and record who appears and what sources they cite.
  • Check your Google Business Profile: does your description's first sentence name your service and city? Does it list every city you serve? Are all services listed with descriptions?
  • Count your Google reviews and your review velocity over the last 90 days. If it is zero, set up your review request text sequence this week.
  • Verify your exact business name, address, and phone number match on Google, Yelp, BBB, and the Camarillo Chamber directory.

2Weeks 2 to 3: Content structure

  • Rewrite the first paragraph of your homepage and top service pages to lead with a direct, specific answer to the implied customer question.
  • Add a FAQ section to every service page: 5 to 8 questions, direct answers, 60 to 100 words each. Write them as if a customer asked you directly.
  • Add FAQPage JSON-LD schema to every page that has a FAQ section.
  • Add or update your LocalBusiness schema: include geo coordinates, areaServed listing all Ventura County cities, and sameAs links to your GBP, Yelp, and BBB.
  • Find one specific data point you can embed on each major page (a conversion rate, a job count, a timeframe) and add it with context.

3Weeks 3 to 4: Off-site brand presence

  • Claim or create your listing on the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce directory if you do not have one.
  • Claim your BBB listing and ensure it is accurate and complete.
  • Search r/camarillo and r/venturacounty for questions in your category from the past 6 months. Answer one or two of the most relevant threads genuinely and in detail.
  • Record a 3 to 5 minute video answering your single most frequently asked customer question. Post on YouTube with a full text description and embed it on your website.
  • Email three satisfied customers this week and ask directly for a Google review with the direct link.

4Month 2: Build and sustain

  • Publish one piece of content monthly that only you can write from direct experience: a real job story, a local market observation, a specific Ventura County guide.
  • Answer one relevant Reddit or Quora question per week. Set a reminder. Be useful, not promotional.
  • Pitch one story angle to the Camarillo Acorn or Ventura County Star. A community angle or local business milestone is often enough for a brief mention.
  • Post one new Google Post per week to your Business Profile: minimum 150 words, your city name and primary service used naturally, a photo from a real job.
  • Repeat the manual AI audit from Week 1. Compare who is mentioned now to your original baseline.
